One of the basic assumptions made in designing a structure
for ultimate strength by plastic design methods, is that a plastic
hi~ge can be formed; that is, that the member is capable of undergoing
large inelas tic rotations wi thin a limited region (plas tic
'hinge' region) so that the moments may be redistributed to develop
the full strength of the structure. To accomplish these large rotations,
provisions must be made to prevent the member from falling
prematurely by lateral-torsional buckling.
