Abstract

We empirically examine whether firms increase financial leverage following mergers. Firms could increase financial leverage either because of an increase in debt capacity or because of unused debt capacity from pre-merger years. We find that financial leverage of combined firms increases significantly following mergers. A cross-sectional analysis shows that the change in financial leverage around mergers is significantly positively correlated with the announcement period market-adjusted returns. Further tests indicate that the increase in financial leverage is an outcome of an increase in debt capacity, although there is weak evidence that some of the increase in financial leverage is a result of past unused debt capacity

Abstract

China’s transition from a command economy to a market economy calls for a transformation from a centralized to a decentralized model in research and development (R&D) management control system. Virtually all scientific research was funded and monitored by the state under the centralized economy, thus creating an incentive structure for individuals and institutes to get state research grants to carry out scientific research without being able to commercially exploit its final results. This study investigates a biotechnology research institute’s commercialization effort in response to economic reform. The findings show that market demand is not sufficient in bridging the gap between technological potential

 nd commercial exploitation. Management control system based on clearly defined property rights is of critical importance to successful R&D commercialization, and market-based financing is key to an

effective control system.

Abstract

A raft of commentators has observed that too little is known of the contingencies that precede the instigation of formal planning. The objective of this paper is to explore, describe, and explicate the processes, factors, and dynamics that relate to the initiation of formal planning efforts within organizations. This article uses the following structure. First, a conceptual model of the antecedents of planning initiation is presented that identifies and describes ten antecedent factors. Thereafter, the research design, methodology, and the approach adopted is described and justified. After tests to gauge the reliability and validity of the measures employed (including confirmatory factor analysis), 237 responses to a mailed survey are analyzed and the presented framework evaluated. The paper culminates with a discussion of implications.

What is electronic and information technology

 

“Electronic and information technology” is a term used in the 1998 amendments to Section 508 of the Rehabilitation Act. The term is used to define the scope of products covered under Section 508. Section 508 requires that electronic and information technology that is developed, procured, maintained, or used by the federal government be accessible.

 

Electronic and information technology includes computer hardware and software, operating systems, web-based information and applications, telephones and other telecommunications products, video equipment and multimedia products, information kiosks, and office products such as photocopiers and fax machines.

The Rational Unified Process is the information systems methodolgy most widely in use today. The main contributers are the three amigos Ivar Jacobson, Grady Booch and James Rumbaugh who also designed the Unified Modeling Language.
It is mainly based on the Ericsson Approach, Objectory and the Rational Approach, which were combined 1995 to the Rational Objectory Process. The Unified Modeling Language together with the expirience of from Rational Inc. acquired software tool companies formed the Rational Unified Process.
The Unified Process is a software development process, that is the set of activities needed to transform a users's requirements into a software system, but it is also seen as process framework, which can be specialised for different purposes.
