اینها اجازه می‌دهند که شرکت از فرصت‌هایش بهره‌برداری کند و با تهدیدها را خنثی کند. برای مثال شرکت سونی توانسته است که توانایی طراحی، ساخت وفروش وسایل الکترونیکی خود را توسعه دهد. این توانایی برای سهامداران خارجی مثل فروشندگان با ارزش است.

2- منابع و توانایی‌ها منحصربه فرد باشند.

اگر یک سازمان، تنها سازمانی باشد که از یک توانایی برخوردار است در این صورت آن توانایی منبع مزیت رقابتی برای آن سازمان می‌باشد، ولی اگر سازمانهای متعددی یک منبع و یا توانایی مشخص را دارا باشند، در این صورت آن سازمانها، مشابهت در رقابت دارند و هیچ کدام مزیتی بر دیگری ندارد.

3- منابع و توانایی‌ها به سختی قابل تقلید باشند.

شرکت‌های رقیب با تقلید از یک منبع و یا توانایی موجب زیان شرکت پیشتاز می‌شوند. اگر در ایجاد سود‌آوری مزیت شرکت ماندگار باشد سود با ارزش‌تر خواهد بود. پس می‌توان گفت که شرکتی ‌می‌تواند از مزیت رقابتی بلندمدت استفاده کند که شرکت‌های رقیب نتوانند از آن تقلید نمایند.

برای مثال مک دونالد، چندین سال است که رقبایش را بخاطر موقعیت بهتر منابع فیزیکی) و عملکرد با کیفیت بالای سیستم که محصول مناسب را با قیمت پایین تحویل می‌دهد. ( یک منبع سازمانی )، از صحنه بیرون کرده است.

یک شرکت برای بدست آوردن سود از یک منبع واحد و با ارزش، باید سازماندهی شود. برای مثال، زیراکس یک آزمایشگاه تحقیقاتی به نام پارک ( Park ) را ایجاد کرد که توانست در اواخر دهه 1960 و 1970  یک نوآوری شگفت انگیز در تکنولوژی پدید آورد که شامل کامپیوترهای شخصی، موسی، پرینترهای لیزری و نرم افزارهایی از نوع ویندوز بود. البته این شرکت سودی از این نوآوری نبرد، چرا که سازماندهی مناسب برای انجام اینکار را نداشت. برای مثال، ارتباطات ضعیف باعث شد که بیشتر مدیران شرکت زیراکس از کراهایی که مؤسسه تحقیقاتی پارک انجام می‌داد با خبر نشوند.

اگر یک منبع و یا توانایی با ارزش، منحصر به فرد و غیرقابل تقلید باشد و همچنین در بیشتر از یک عرصه‌کاری، کاربرد داشته باشد، شرکت دارای صلاحیت هسته‌ای و یا صلاحیت اختصاصی است. شرکتهای مثل وال‌ ـ  مارت ودیسنی از جمله شکرتهایی هستند که از منابع مزیت رقابتشان در چند کار مختلف به بهترین شکل بهره‌برداری می‌کنند. کمااینکه دیسنی، صلاحیت اختصاصی در خلاقیت، نوآوری و تصویر کردن شخصیتهای کارتونی باارزش و منحصر به فرد در کتابها، فیلم‌ها، گردشگاهها و تلویزیون دارد. بیشتر منابع و توانایی‌هایی که شرح داده شده‌اند، ملموس هستند، آنها می‌توانند دیده شوند، لمس گردند و یا اندازه‌گیری شوند. در بسیاری از شرکتها کلید مزیت رقابتی، ترکیب منابع و توسعه توانایی‌هایی است که به سختی قابل تقلید هستند برای مثال یک اختراع ثبت شده و انحصاری که محسوس می‌باشد ممکن است برای مدتی سود یک سازمان را فراهم کند، اما توانایی توسعه و معرفی سریع و دقیق محصولات جدید، نیاز به تلاشهای منابع دیگر است مثل بازاریاب ( تعیین نیاز و مشخص کردن آن )، مهندسین طراح و پیشگام ( خلق کالا و مشخص کردن مواد )، اجرا و بهره‌برداری ( ترتیب دادن مواد خام و تولید محصول ) و خیلی چیزهای دیگر، راه را برای تفلید کردن و اضهار عقیده نمودن رقبا مشکل می‌سازد. دیگر مثالهای منابع و توانایی‌های ملموس، ایجاد رابطه حسنه با افراد ذینفع خارجی، اعتبارات سازمانی مناسب و شخصیت حقوقی خوش نام است. دیسنی سود فراوانی از نام خودش می‌برد که این نشان دهنده صلاحیت هسته‌ای آن است. مایکل آیزنرمدیر اجرایی آن می‌گوید: « ما اساساً یک شرکت اداری هستیم، نام دیسنی در همة جهان شناخته شده است، ما این نام را نگهداری، اصلاح و بهبود می‌دهیم و خواهان ترقی و ترفیع آن هستیم و با میل و رغبت برای آن تبلیغ می‌کنیم.
